Uploading an image in the wrong size is the fastest way to make a great post look amateur: platforms crop it badly, compress it twice, or stretch it out of proportion. Here is the complete cheat sheet of social media image sizes for 2026, plus a fast way to resize any photo to fit.

The 2026 cheat sheet

Platform Placement Size (px) Aspect ratio
Instagram Square post 1080 × 1080 1:1
Portrait post 1080 × 1350 4:5
Story / Reel cover 1080 × 1920 9:16
Profile photo 320 × 320 1:1
Facebook Feed post 1200 × 630 ~1.91:1
Cover photo 820 × 312 ~2.63:1
Story 1080 × 1920 9:16
X (Twitter) In-feed image 1600 × 900 16:9
Header banner 1500 × 500 3:1
Profile photo 400 × 400 1:1
LinkedIn Feed post 1200 × 627 ~1.91:1
Profile banner 1584 × 396 4:1
YouTube Video thumbnail 1280 × 720 16:9
Channel banner 2560 × 1440 16:9
Shorts 1080 × 1920 9:16
WhatsApp Profile photo 640 × 640 1:1
Pinterest Standard pin 1000 × 1500 2:3

Three tips that matter more than exact pixels

1. Instagram portrait (4:5) wins the feed. A 1080 × 1350 post occupies more screen space than a square, which usually means more engagement. Export at 4:5 when a photo works in portrait.

2. Keep text inside the safe zone on Stories and Reels. The top ~250 px and bottom ~310 px of a 1080 × 1920 design get covered by the profile header and caption UI. Keep captions and logos in the middle band.

3. Upload at full resolution within the size limit. Platforms re-compress everything you post. Starting with a sharp, correctly-sized image (e.g. YouTube thumbnails under 2 MB) is the difference between crisp and muddy. If your file is over a limit, compress it with Compress Image to Size instead of letting the platform do it brutally.

How to resize for social media in 30 seconds

  1. Open Resize Image for Social Media.
  2. Upload your photo — it stays on your device the whole time.
  3. Pick the platform preset from the list above (Instagram post, Story, YouTube thumbnail, LinkedIn banner…).
  4. Adjust the crop if needed, then download.

No account, no watermark, no upload to a server.

FAQ

What is the best Instagram image size in 2026? 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) for feed posts — it takes up maximum screen space. Use 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels, and 1080 × 1080 (1:1) for square posts.

What size is a Facebook cover photo? 820 × 312 pixels displays correctly on desktop. Keep important content centered: on mobile the visible area shrinks to roughly 640 × 360.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size? 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), under 2 MB, in JPG, PNG or GIF. Resize yours with the social media presets before uploading.

Why does Instagram ruin my image quality? Instagram compresses every upload. If your source file is already oversized or heavily compressed, quality degrades twice. Export at the exact recommended dimensions and keep the file reasonably small before posting.
